What is an Open Hospital?
Open Hospital means you’re welcome to stay with your pet during their emergency visit. Whether they’re being assessed, treated, or recovering, we invite you to be part of their care journey – wherever appropriate.
When can I stay with my pet?
We encourage you to stay as much as possible. However, during certain procedures – like surgery or critical care – we may ask you to step out briefly for safety or focus. We’ll always communicate clearly about when and why. We also need to consider the needs of other patients and clients in our hospital, as we care for multiple pets at the same time.
Why does AES Tanawha offer Open Hospital?
Because we know how hard it is to be separated from your pet in an emergency.
Open Hospitals:
- Reduces stress for both pets and owners
- Builds trust through transparency
- Helps pet parents understand treatment and costs
- Strengthens the bond between our team and your family
What will I see?
You may witness parts of your pet’s care, including triage, monitoring, and treatment. This can include medical procedures, clinical equipment, and a busy hospital environment. If something becomes distressing or overwhelming, we’ll support you every step of the way.
What if I don’t want to be in the room?
That’s completely okay. Some people prefer to wait in reception or head home, and we’ll keep you updated throughout. Open Hospital is about giving you the option – not the obligation – to stay.
Can I help care for my pet while I’m there?
Sometimes, yes. With guidance from our team, you may be able to provide comfort, hold your pet during procedures, or help monitor them. If it’s ever not safe or helpful, we’ll let you know.
Are there any rules I need to follow?
To ensure safety and a smooth experience:
- Please follow team instructions at all times
- Don’t touch medical equipment or other animals
- Step out if requested during emergencies or sensitive procedures
- Ask questions – we’re here to guide you!
Is Open Hospital right for every pet?
Not always. Some pets become more unsettled when their owner is present, and there are also some conditions we treat (tick paralysis for example) where visiting these pets can worsen their condition. In these cases, we may discuss alternative arrangements that are better for your pet’s wellbeing. Our priority is always what’s best for them.
How is AES Tanawha different from other emergency vets?
Not every hospital offers Open Hospital. At AES Tanawha we’ve adapted our space and culture to welcome clients into the experience – because we believe no one should wait behind closed doors when their pet is in need.
