What Does Open Hospital Mean to the Animal Emergency Service Tanawha Team?

Open hospital model at AES Tanawha

At Animal Emergency Service (AES) Tanawha, we believe that in an emergency, you shouldn’t have to be separated from your pet. That’s why we offer something unique: an Open Hospital model.

If you’ve never heard of this before — or aren’t sure what it means — here’s everything you need to know, including what our team thinks and why pet owners love it.

What Is an Open Hospital?

An Open Hospital is just that — open.

When your pet is in our care, you’re welcome to stay by their side. Whether they’re being assessed, treated, or monitored, we invite you to be part of their emergency journey.

This isn’t the norm in most emergency vet clinics. But we believe it should be.

“People can see what’s going on in the hospital – it helps them understand what’s happening to their pet.”

Dr Carley

Veterinarian, Animal Emergency Service Tanawha

Why Do We Do This?

Because it’s better for everyone.

Open Hospital helps reduce stress for both pets and people. It fosters trust, transparency, and compassion — values we hold close.

Dr Brittany, Animal Emergency Service Tanawha“Lots of pets are better with their owners around. It can really change the experience.”

When can I stay?

You’re welcome to remain with your pet throughout their visit. That includes time in the treatment area or ICU, where appropriate.

There are some moments — like during surgery or critical procedures — where we may need you to briefly step out. But we’ll always explain why, and you’ll never be left in the dark.

Dr Danielle, Clinical Director, Animal Emergency Service Tanawha

“There are some conditions we treat, tick paralysis for example, where visits can worsen the condition of the patient. In these situations, we will advise against visiting your pet. We will do our best to help keep you connected through photo and video updates as much as possible.”

How Does It Help?

Open Hospital creates more connection and understanding.

  • You’re there for your pet when they need you most
  • You can ask questions and be part of the decision-making
  • You see exactly what care looks like, in real time
  • You gain peace of mind knowing your pet isn’t alone

“It’s a welcoming, open environment. Clients feel reassured because they’re not left in the dark.”

Olivia

Veterinary Nurse Assistant, Animal Emergency Service Tanawha

Are There Any Challenges?

Like any model, it has its limits. Not every situation is suited for a visitor in the room. Some clients may feel overwhelmed. Some procedures require privacy, focus, or sterility.

That’s why our team receives regular training, support, and guidance on how to create a safe and calming experience for both pets and their people.

We’re committed to clear communication and making sure you feel supported, not uncertain.

Why It Matters

Most pet owners say they’d want this option if their own pet were hospitalised. And many tell us it’s the reason they chose AES Tanawha in the first place.

Jess, Client Care Representative, Animal Emergency Service Tanawha“It’s not just about the treatment — it’s about the connection. Letting people stay shows that we care about them, too.”

We believe your presence should never be an afterthought. It should be part of the care plan.

Our Promise

At Animal Emergency Service Tanawha, we welcome your presence. We’ll communicate clearly, support you through difficult moments, and always put your pet’s needs first.

Because they deserve comfort, and so do you.

Open Hospital is one more way we put patients — and people — at the heart of what we do.
