What to Expect

Client Information

Your pet is being transferred to the Animal Emergency Service (AES) Hobart for ongoing veterinary care.

AES is a separate organisation from your regular daytime hospital and is the only 24-hour emergency veterinary hospital in Tasmania.

AES is a fully equipped veterinary hospital, staffed by dedicated veterinarians and nurses that have specific interests and training in Emergency and Critical Care. There are always veterinarians and nurses in the hospital whilst your pet is at AES.

We provide after hours and emergency care to all the animals of Hobart and Southern Tasmania.

The Process

  1. Your pet will be transported in our dedicated patient ambulance to our hospital.
  2. When your pet arrives at the hospital they will be examined by our team of veterinarians and nurses.
  3. You will receive a text that your pet has arrived.
  4. Our veterinary team will examine your pet, review the plan made by your veterinarian and set your pet up in a bed for the night and chart them for all examinations, procedures (if necessary) and medications.
  5. Our veterinarian will phone you to update you on your pet’s condition and the plan for their overnight hospital stay and plan for the following day. Please note, our focus is our patients, so the timing of this telephone call can vary a lot, depending on the requirements of our patients.

At this time the vet will provide an estimate for the care for your pet in hospital and request you make a payment toward that care. We will send a secure link to a payment system (bpoint).

  • For uncomplicated, stable patients this is likely to be $250 to $400 for the night, which will cover the cost of overnight care.
  • For more complicated and critical patients, our veterinarian will discuss costs and request you leave a more substantial deposit.

If there are changes to your pet’s condition overnight we will update you. We request you have your telephone with you overnight. If your pet is stable you will hear from us again in the morning.

Our veterinarian will contact you between 6 and 9am to give you another update on how things have been overnight.

At this time you will be asked to pay any outstanding amounts.

As an emergency and critical care hospital we can provide state of the art care to your pet. We welcome you to come down to see our facility if you would rather have an in-person update.
